Software Fun Day 2010

SFD2010 - 3rd Sat September - 18 September 2010

Contents

Is it worth it?

Positive

  • Community building and focus for celebration
  • Seen as a hub of Free Software activity by others in Aus

Negative

  • Huge amount of energy and effort needed to run it
  • No tangible return on this investment of time, effort, money

Who do we target?

Discussed and discarded Business target as too hard.

Some positive attitude towards senior citz, but most agreed with focus on kids and families - and agreement to call it Software Fun Day.

How do we measure outcomes?

  • Competition / Survey - use a liveCD
  • Exit survey on the day
  • Number of ppl at the event
  • Number of ppl who attend a follow up event
  • LUV main & beginners meetings in October promoted for follow up

How? Where? Materials?

How

  • Computer Lab
    • games
    • hands on workshops
  • Talks
  • Install Fest
  • Community Tables [Need good signage]
  • BYO machines for installs and hands on learning

Where

  • Community Centres
    • All ctte members to Investigate their own local options
  • Shopping Centres
  • Federation Square
  • The Royal Melbourne Show
  • School Fetes
  • Farmers Markets
  • Local Public Libraries
  • Computer Swap Meets

Venue Options to be considered

  • Royal Melbourne Show

Cost $4000 - $4500 for a 3x3 metre stand for the duration of the show... in the kids zone or the living & lifestyle zone. Also - possibly an option to consider participating in the super show trail bag... where we give people a CD when they show up the stand. Dates: Saturday 18 September to Tuesday 28 September So it starts on SFD.

Local Options : Monash City area

Several Community Halls of which 3 seems interesting: 1. Clayton Library area:

Pros: Easy PT. decent meeting room 1 (+ possibly another one) + large theatre auditorium
        Free wireless Internet from Library
Cons: Well its in Clayton - not so Central

2. GlenWaverley Library Area:

Pros: as for clayton , less auditoium and room smaller.
But much busier so potentially larger audience
Cons : Less space compared to Clayton in General

3. Oakleigh Old Town Hall.

Pros : Good Space and good PT
Cons : Slightly out of the way to usual Sat Crowd

There is also a place in Jells Park - I would personally love to do something there -it just a very nice surrounding - but I know its too much out of the way.

While these places may not be top of list for SFD, they would be good for SFD type followup events in a future.
